The introduction of the first commercial expert system during the 1980s paved the way for the development of many other AI technologies that have transformed many areas of our lives, such as self-driving cars and virtual personal assistants. The creation of the first expert system during the 1960s was a significant milestone in the development of artificial intelligence. Expert systems are computer programs that mimic the decision-making abilities of human experts in specific domains. The first expert system, called DENDRAL, was developed in the 1960s by Edward Feigenbaum and Joshua Lederberg at Stanford University.

World War Two brought together scientists from many disciplines, including the emerging fields of neuroscience and computing. But, in the last 25 years, new approaches to AI, coupled with advances in technology, mean that we may now be on the brink of realising those pioneers’ dreams. Artificial intelligence provides a number of tools that are useful to bad actors, such as authoritarian governments, terrorists, criminals or rogue states. In agriculture, AI has helped farmers identify areas that need irrigation, fertilization, pesticide treatments or increasing yield.

For instance, AI could automatically pay small amounts for access to information, computational resources, or specialized services from other AI agents. This could lead to more efficient resource allocation, new business models, and accelerated economic growth in the digital economy. In April 2024, the company announced a partnership with Google Cloud aimed at integrating generative AI solutions into the customer service experience. Through Google Cloud’s Vortex AI platform, Discover’s contact center agents have access to document summarization capabilities and real-time search assistance so they can quickly track down the information they need to handle customers’ questions and issues. This can leave customers with potentially longer waiting times as they’re only able to get live help for non-urgent requests during working hours. In fact, on Wednesday, the government announced a new project to help teachers use AI more precisely. A bank of anonymised lesson plans and curriculums will now be used to train different educational AI models which will then help teachers mark homework and plan out their classes. However, the idea of handing over children’s education to artificial intelligence is controversial. “Ultimately, if you really want to know exactly why a child is not learning, I think the AI systems can pinpoint that more effectively.” Regulatory uncertainty creates additional obstacles to widespread adoption of AI-to-AI crypto transactions.

Newell, Simon, and Shaw went on to write a more powerful program, the General Problem Solver, or GPS. The first version of GPS ran in 1957, and work continued on the project for about a decade.

Introduction: Building the AI bank of the future

It also certainly underscores a recent argument made by The Atlantic’s Charlie Warzel, who observed that the “meme-loving” MAGA aesthetic and the hyperreal tone of AI slop are, in the murky annals of social platforms like X, increasingly merging together. Similarly, in the field of Computer Vision, the emergence of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) allowed for more accurate object recognition and image classification. During the 1960s and early 1970s, there was a lot of optimism and excitement around AI and its potential to revolutionise various industries. But as we discussed in the past section, this enthusiasm was dampened by the AI winter, which was characterised by a lack of progress and funding for AI research. AI has failed to achieve it’s grandiose objectives and in no part of the field have the discoveries made so far produced the major impact that was then promised. This concept was discussed at the conference and became a central idea in the field of AI research.

This acknowledges the risks that advanced AIs could be misused – for example to spread misinformation – but says they can also be a force for good. Twenty eight nations at the summit – including the UK, US, the European Union and China – signed a statement about the future of AI. But the field of AI has become much broader than just the pursuit of true, humanlike intelligence. The idea of inanimate objects coming to life as intelligent beings has been around for a long time. The ancient Greeks had myths about robots, and Chinese and Egyptian engineers built automatons.

Intelligent agents

This research led to the development of several landmark AI systems that paved the way for future AI development. Although symbolic knowledge representation and logical reasoning produced useful applications in the 80s and received massive amounts of funding, it was still unable to solve problems in perception, robotics, learning and common sense. China’s Tianhe-2 doubled the world’s top supercomputing speed at 33.86 petaflops, retaining the title of the world’s fastest system for the third consecutive time. The introduction of AI in the 1950s very much paralleled the beginnings of the Atomic Age. Though their evolutionary paths have differed, both technologies are viewed as posing an existential threat to humanity. Artificial intelligence, or at least the modern concept of it, has been with us for several decades, but only in the recent past has AI captured the collective psyche of everyday business and society. Finally, we will see a greater emphasis on the ethical and societal implications of AI.

When that time comes (but better even before the time comes), we will need to have a serious conversation about machine policy and ethics (ironically both fundamentally human subjects), but for now, we’ll allow AI to steadily improve and run amok in society. In the first half of the 20th century, science fiction familiarized the world with the concept of artificially intelligent robots. It began with the “heartless” Tin man from the Wizard of Oz and continued with the humanoid robot that impersonated Maria in Metropolis. By the 1950s, we had a generation of scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers with the concept of artificial intelligence (or AI) culturally assimilated in their minds. One such person was Alan Turing, a young British polymath who explored the mathematical possibility of artificial intelligence.

It has been incredibly successful in tasks such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and even playing complex games such as Go. The 1990s saw significant advancements in the field of artificial intelligence across a wide range of topics. In machine learning, the development of decision trees, support vector machines, and ensemble methods led to breakthroughs in speech recognition and image classification. In intelligent tutoring, researchers demonstrated the effectiveness of systems that adapt to individual learning styles and provide personalized feedback to students.

What is artificial intelligence? And, why should you learn it?

The deluge of data we generate daily is essential to training and improving AI systems for tasks such as automating processes more efficiently, producing more reliable predictive outcomes and providing greater network security. AI is about the ability of computers and systems to perform tasks that typically require human cognition. Its tentacles reach into every aspect of our lives and livelihoods, from early detections and better treatments for cancer patients to new revenue streams and smoother operations for businesses of all shapes and sizes. Large language models such as GPT-4 have also been used in the field of creative writing, with some authors using them to generate new text or as a tool for inspiration. For example, a deep learning network might learn to recognise the shapes of individual letters, then the structure of words, and finally the meaning of sentences.

Before the emergence of big data, AI was limited by the amount and quality of data that was available for training and testing machine learning algorithms. It established AI as a field of study, set out a roadmap for research, and sparked a wave of innovation in the field. The conference’s legacy can be seen in the development of AI programming languages, research labs, and the Turing test. Machines built in this way don’t possess any knowledge of previous events but instead only “react” to what is before them in a given moment. As a result, they can only perform certain advanced tasks within a very narrow scope, such as playing chess, and are incapable of performing tasks outside of their limited context.

AI is used in many industries driven by technology, such as health care, finance, and transportation. The AI boom of the 1960s was a period of significant progress in AI research and development. It was a time when researchers explored new AI approaches and developed new programming languages and tools specifically designed for AI applications.

In 1996, IBM had its computer system Deep Blue—a chess-playing program—compete against then-world chess champion Gary Kasparov in a six-game match-up. At the time, Deep Blue won only one of the six games, but the following year, it won the rematch. Samuel’s checkers program was also notable for being one of the first efforts at evolutionary computing.

The company’s credit analysis solution uses machine learning to capture and digitize financials as well as delivers near-real-time compliance data and deal-specific characteristics. Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses many layers of neural networks to understand patterns in data. It’s often used in the most advanced AI applications, such as self-driving cars. These new computers enabled humanoid robots, like the NAO robot, which could do things predecessors like Shakey had found almost impossible. NAO robots used lots of the technology pioneered over the previous decade, such as learning enabled by neural networks.

In a short period, computers evolved so quickly and became such an integral part of our daily lives that it is easy to forget how recent this technology is. The first digital computers were only invented about eight decades ago, as the timeline shows. Mars was orbiting much closer to Earth in 2004, so NASA took advantage of that navigable distance by sending two rovers—named Spirit and Opportunity—to the red planet.

At Bletchley Park Turing illustrated his ideas on machine intelligence by reference to chess—a useful source of challenging and clearly defined problems against which proposed methods for problem solving could be tested. In principle, a chess-playing computer could play by searching exhaustively through all the available moves, but in practice this is impossible because it would involve examining an astronomically large number of moves. Although Turing experimented with designing chess programs, he had to content himself with theory in the absence of a computer to run his chess program.

The Logic Theorist was designed to prove mathematical theorems using a set of logical rules, and it was the first computer program to use artificial intelligence techniques such as heuristic search and symbolic reasoning. The Logic Theorist was able to prove 38 of the first 52 theorems in Whitehead and Russell’s Principia Mathematica, which was a remarkable achievement at the time. This breakthrough led to the development of other AI programs, including the General Problem Solver (GPS) and the first chatbot, ELIZA. The development of the first AI program in 1951 paved the way for the development of modern AI techniques, such as machine learning and natural language processing, and it laid the foundation for the emergence of the field of artificial intelligence. In the context of the history of AI, generative AI can be seen as a major milestone that came after the rise of deep learning.

GPT-3 was trained on 175 billion parameters, which far exceeded the 1.5 billion parameters GPT-2 had been trained on. In the 1950s, computing machines essentially functioned as large-scale calculators. In fact, when organizations like NASA needed the answer to specific calculations, like the trajectory of a rocket launch, they more regularly turned to human “computers” or teams of women tasked with solving those complex equations [1]. Another product of the microworld approach was Shakey, a mobile robot developed at the Stanford Research Institute by Bertram Raphael, Nils Nilsson, and others during the period 1968–72. The robot occupied a specially built microworld consisting of walls, doorways, and a few simply shaped wooden blocks.

Some researchers continued to work on AI projects and make important advancements during this time, including the development of neural networks and the beginnings of machine learning. But progress in the field was slow, and it was not until the 1990s that interest in AI began to pick up again (we are coming to that). The AI boom of the 1960s was a period of significant progress and interest in the development of artificial intelligence (AI). It was a time when computer scientists and researchers were exploring new methods for creating intelligent machines and programming them to perform tasks traditionally thought to require human intelligence.

Early demonstrations such as Newell and Simon’s General Problem Solver and Joseph Weizenbaum’s ELIZA showed promise toward the goals of problem solving and the interpretation of spoken language respectively. These successes, as well as the advocacy of leading researchers (namely the attendees of the DSRPAI) convinced government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to fund AI research at several institutions. The government was particularly interested in a machine that could transcribe and translate spoken language as well as high throughput data processing. Today, expert systems continue to be used in various industries, and their development has led to the creation of other AI technologies, such as machine learning and natural language processing. The Perceptron was seen as a major milestone in AI because it demonstrated the potential of machine learning algorithms to mimic human intelligence. It showed that machines could learn from experience and improve their performance over time, much like humans do.

Allegheny County has passed use of the platforms while a working group develops a policy. When AI is used, city staff are to “mind the bias” that can be deep in the code “based on past stereotypes.” And all use of AI must be disclosed to any audiences that receive the end product, plus logged and tracked. “I got really excited about what this could do for young people, how it could help them change their lives. Breakthroughs in computer science, mathematics, or neuroscience all serve as potential outs through the ceiling of Moore’s Law. Five years later, the proof of concept was initialized through Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw, and Herbert Simon’s, Logic Theorist. The Logic Theorist was a program designed to mimic the problem solving skills of a human and was funded by Research and Development (RAND) Corporation. It’s considered by many to be the first artificial intelligence program and was presented at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (DSRPAI) hosted by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky in 1956. In this historic conference, McCarthy, imagining a great collaborative effort, brought together top researchers from various fields for an open ended discussion on artificial intelligence, the term which he coined at the very event. Sadly, the conference fell short of McCarthy’s expectations; people came and went as they pleased, and there was failure to agree on standard methods for the field.

The software will also create art physically, on paper, for the first time since the 1990s. Highlights included an onsite “Hack the Climate” hackathon, where teams of beginner and experienced MIT App Inventor users had a single day to develop an app for fighting climate change. The technology is behind the voice-controlled virtual assistants Siri and Alexa, and helps Facebook and X – formerly known as Twitter- decide which social media posts to show users. Sixty-four years after Turing published his idea of a test that would prove machine intelligence, a chatbot called Eugene Goostman finally passed.

The output of one layer serves as the input to the next, allowing the network to extract increasingly complex features from the data. Ever since the Dartmouth Conference of the 1950s, AI has been recognised as a legitimate field of study and the early years of AI research focused on symbolic logic and rule-based systems. This involved manually programming machines to make decisions based on a set of predetermined rules. While these systems were useful in certain applications, they were limited in their ability to learn and adapt to new data.

Their bomb disposal robot, PackBot, marries user control with intelligent capabilities such as explosives sniffing. The IBM-built machine was, on paper, far superior to Kasparov – capable of evaluating up to 200 million positions a second. The supercomputer won the contest, dubbed ‘the brain’s last stand’, with such flair that Kasparov believed a human being had to be behind the controls. But for others, this simply showed brute force at work on a highly specialised problem with clear rules. Artificial intelligence is no longer a technology of the future; AI is here, and much of what is reality now would have looked like sci-fi just recently. It is a technology that already impacts all of us, and the list above includes just a few of its many applications. When you book a flight, it is often an artificial intelligence, no longer a human, that decides what you pay.

Case-based reasoning systems were also developed, which could solve problems by searching for similar cases in a knowledge base.
